My cover of ‘five’ is made up of a number of one-take vocal tracks, each trying to mimic Dan’s playing as I (simultaneously) hear it through headphones—a kind of follow-the-leader with Dan leading the way. Some processing is put on the vocals, most notably a pitch shifter that attempts to emulate the effect that occurs at 0’13” in the original recording (a squeaky cheeky harmonic?). Dan is a Magic Trumpet Man, and none can know how he achieves such sublime concision, nuance and playful expression in a single breath. It was a pleasure to take part of the EX/IN project, and an honour to be a part of this music community.
