As a percussionist in improvising ensembles, I often to try to spontaneously imitate others’ sounds with this or that particular object from my collection. So, it made sense to approach covering Dan’s piece in a similar way. Given that this was a recording context, I chose not to torture myself by trying to perfectly imitate Dan’s complex piece in one take, simultaneously playing every object I’d chosen and nailing the timings perfectly (although I’m sure that would have been a very rewarding challenge!), but rather, I just left my field recorder going in the background and took my time picking out particular elements I could hear in Dan’s trumpet playing, imitating them one at a time over and over, before editing and arranging these takes in a DAW to match up with Dan’s timings. In order of appearance, I used a bow, a polystyrene box, a long flexible rod taken from inside a kite, a metal sculpture designed to display cupcakes, a fine hay brush on a snare drum and an industrial steel plug on an old drum head. My heartfelt thanks go out to Dan for making this beautiful music, to Sage for coming up with the brilliant covers album concept and co-ordinating all of us to make it happen, and to Josten and the rest of the Tone List folks for amplifying and distributing these sounds out into the aether!
