about

Catherine Ashley
Hostage [2015] for harp and electronics.

Hostage (2015). In 2015 Ashley's world was rocked by a violent, traumatic and public event caused by a close family member. Hostage was penned as a response, and as a way to process her own experience and that of the family member. The harp motif centres around a Korean scale called KyeMyonJo, using a bending technique above the bridge pin to emulate the timbre of the gayageum, a traditional Korean instrument. The work utilises various extended techniques and processed harp sounds to convey the breaking down of sanity, ending with the final two strikes, bringing the nightmare to a close.
