about

Lindsay Vickery
lyrebird (wetlands) [2014] for bass clarinet, electric guitar, harp and field recording.

In Lyrebird [2014] a visualisation of the sonic features of a recorded environment are generated in “near real-time” as a score/improvisation guide. The work was inspired by and created for percussionist/composer/improviser Vanessa Tomlinson. The score is an alternate form of spectrogram that displays the principal sonic features of the field recording as shapes, and colours them according to their timbral properties.
The visualisation scrolls right to left across the screen and the source recording is delayed, so that is heard as the so that the corresponding images in the “score” reach the left of the screen as the sound they represent. This process is aimed at creating openness in the notation by foregrounding elements of timbre and texture rather than pitch or rhythm, providing a space that assists sonic imagination to guide an improvisation.
