In preparation for creating a response to ‘one’, I spent a good deal of time mapping out every gesture that appears over its short duration. This led to a whole new level of appreciation for the nuance and quantity of material present within the piece. Because of this, I was excited by the prospect of attempting as close to a carbon copy of ‘one’ as I could. I quickly scrapped the idea of accomplishing this in a single take—instead, version is comprised of individual takes of every gesture, each recorded dozens of times while the original was looped through headphones. The most accurate sounding takes were then selected and pieced together as closely to the original as possible. I hope that the highly overdriven guitar sound, as well as creating a comically over-the-top interpretation of the piece, helps to highlight the amazing level of detail and variation in Dan’s improvisational technique.
