The original version of ‘seven’ encapsulates for me a surprising level of nuance and detail, and like all of the pieces on the album, is beautifully concise. On multiple listens I continued to hear more layers of texture, noise, pitch, pulse and rhythm. I also became somehow drawn to the apparent instability of the musical quality, as this seemed to express something both ephemeral and transitory. I thought in response to this that I should use these sonic differences to highlight the sonic structure of my own response. Therefore, I chose to extract the features of Dan’s original recording, and use this data to control the granulation of a number of other sound sources, ranging from noisy brushwork to analog synthesis. I took contrasting sound sources, as this would help to highlight the marked differences present in Dan’s performance. From here I took further liberties in the DAW to apply modulation, distortion, and multi-band compression to further highlight the entrance of broadband noise.
