The original ‘seventeen’ bursts into being all of a sudden then swiftly tapers down into a softer, repeating cycle of breath sounds and valve taps before giving out with a final expulsion of air. I was interested in capturing this general shape when producing my own version of the track and used this as a starting point. I then experimented with a variety of different techniques and sound sources to find a combination which seemed to best capture the vibe and intent of the original. The crash of open hi-hats, a one-handed snare roll, brush-strokes and rim taps were all chosen, not just for the similarity in timbre to some of Dan’s sounds, but also for the ranges of expression available (and physical challenges encountered) through their use. I also notated some of the subtle rhythmic phrases that jumped out at different points, not necessarily to re-create them, but as a reference point to guide me through. Finally, I opted to record each take whilst listening to the original in headphones because this helped to keep me connected with Dan’s intensity and pacing. The end result is something that I find to be quite different to other things that I have recorded in a solo context and I would say that this only attests to the clarity and quality of the original piece. I was honoured to have been asked to be a part of this project (many thanks to Sage!). Dan’s approach to his craft is a constant source of inspiration and ‘IN/EX’ was such a bold and exciting first release, not just for him as an artist, but also for the ‘Tone List’ label–well worth celebrating!
